I did the trope sorting meme thingy that [livejournal.com profile] haldoor did. It was interesting and I'm not really surprised by the results?

Back in the day I used to read a lot. Like 4 books a month. That was good for me, but after a few months, my brain HURT. Now I'm lucky if I can read 1 book a month since I'm so into fanfic.

Anyway...on to the meme.

Taken from [livejournal.com profile] kitmerlot1213 and [livejournal.com profile] kaige68 and probably others.

List ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you, and the books do not have to be in any certain order.

1. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
2. A Cry in the Night by Mary Higgins Clark
3. As Always, Jack by Emma Sweeney
4. Digital Fortress by Dan Brown
5. Deception Point by Dany Brown
6. Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom
7. The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
8. Devil's Knot by Mara Leveritt
9. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
10. Number the Stars by Lois Lowry

Honorable Mentions: I feel I should add Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code, both by Dan Brown as well. But the 2 I put in the actual list were the first ones I read by him, but I can't remember which was the actual first that led me to his other books.

Thinking about those, I came up with so many other books that have stayed with me for a number of reasons.

Anne of Green Gables series by L. M. Montgomery
Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor
Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan
The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan
Northen Lights/The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

We've been back to the apartment for 4 months & 10 days and I'm slowly trying to get my room back to "normal". Mostly I'm doing it so I can get out of the expensive storage unit and to a lesser expensive unit (from $124/month to $80/month), but I need to bring the stuff I'm absolutely going to have in my room back to my room and everything else will be moved to a smaller unit.

Friday I brought home 4 boxes of book. I went through 2 of the boxes and shelved 50 books (I had 5 on my shelf that I got from Christmas)! Today I opened another box and shelved another 20 books. I still have 1 more box to go through...plus another 8 or so boxes in storage. Yeah. I have my own library and it might be growing again soon lol

I also need to go through my DVDs. I got a few for Christmas and I need to shelve them properly (in alphabetical order) so I can find them easily.

In other news...yesterday morning I went to a graduation. My adopted sister, the girl I used to babysit, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology. Being at her graduation made me want to re-visit the idea of going back to school for my Bachelor's Degree, but I can't narrow down what I want my major to be in. I go from Criminal Justice to Law (heading towards law school)...to...I don't know what else I'm interested in that would be worth spending more money I don't have to get a degree I won't be able to use. But I really miss being back in school. It's almost kind of sad.

eta: possible major: Public Administration w/concentrations in either Administrative Management, Criminal Justice Administration, Nonprofit Management, or Public Personnel Administration

My books from Amazon arrived today! Yay!

666 Park Avenue and The Dark Glamour. The release for the 3rd book in the 666 Park Avenue series (The Lost Soul) has been pushed back again. First it was sometime later this month, then the end of January and the last time I checked, the release/delivery date was moved to the end of February.

No problem. That will give me time to read the first 2 books.

Has the TV show been cancelled? No matter. I've been downloading and will probably watch sometimes next month.
simplyn2deep: (iRead)
I was checking my shopping email address and there was a notification from amazon about 666 Park Avenue. So I click on it and it's a sale on the book. That makes sense because of the TV show. It was like $9 or something so I thought what the hell and bought it. Then I saw there's a sequel, The Dark Glamour, so I bought that as well, and on January 2, a third book, The Lost Soul, is going to be released (I pre-ordered it). I have some reading for while I'm at my sister's (though I'm going to be working on my big bang fics mostly)

In other news, I have a deadline for when my room needs to be completely packed. Last night my dad said I needed to plan to have my room empty by November 7th. Okay, I can do that. So long as there's space in storage for me to put everything.

OMG

the insanity!

this fic. it's horrible but I keep reading in hopes it gets better but I know it won't.

it has nearly all of my fic deal breakers but it's like a train wreck...I keep reading.

I just don't know when to stop )
simplyn2deep: (Default)
If there are any Danny/Chin shippers out there, there seems to be some new fics for the pair on AO3. Since October 3rd, there have been 5 fics posted.

so...happy reading?
simplyn2deep: (Default)
first let me say that I know that fanfic is fiction and people can write whatever they want

maybe I should just stop reading an writing fan fic.

I'm going to drive myself crazy trying to figure out why authors do certain things and how readers fall all over it with praise.
simplyn2deep: (Default)
I was going to look up and author for a fic and by the time AO3 loaded, I forgot the author AND the fic!

I've been trying to remember for the last 10 minutes. Every time it feels like the author is coming to me, it slips away again. I know that if I remember the author I'll remember the fic

I can't even remember what I was doing to make me think of this author/fic either.

gah so annoying.
simplyn2deep: (Default)
sometimes I really wonder about the comments I get on my fic.

I wonder what they look like and if they really do get as excited as their comments come across to me.

I really really need to ask my sister if I can stay with her in November and December. I'm just embarrassed to for some reason.
I also need to finish packing up my room. Before long, I'm going to have to pack up the China cabinet...and gah this packing thing just makes me mad. not really I have to pack, but that I'm being told to pack things that aren't mine and that I don't use. The stuff in the China cabinet is all my mom's collected stuff. it's stuff she need to go through and decide if she wants. Because, hand to God, my decision would be to throw it all away. Hell, that's what I'm doing (or will be doing soon-ish) with a lot of the knick-knacks in my room. I just need to pluck up the courage to do it lol

"So you can't live in Manhattan?" she asked.

This is probably my 3rd time trying to get through this book. I really enjoy it, and the other books the author has written, but I just lose interest so fast that I only get between chapters 11 and 19 before I stop reading.

as I've been beta reading a lot more fics, I've noticed something that annoys me a bit (yes, I'm adding it to my list of things that fanfic authors do that annoy me). When Danny is written, he goes from "normal" to ranting at Steve, or at least it's written that.

Like Steve will ask Danny a simple question, then BAM! Danny is off and ranting (and also giving his answer to whatever question was asked).

Best friend or not, I wouldn't want to talk with someone who's default speaking habit (with me) was full on rant.

I also stopped following like 3 fics because it's more of a chore than pleasure to read them. maybe I'll pick up where I left off when the fics are finished.
simplyn2deep: (Default)
a fic can be all sorts of good (when it started) but as the chapters go on, it gets boring.

perhaps due to the author posting once a week, or annoyed by some thrown in (in my opinion) relationship, or some other unknown reason, but I'm really bored with a lot of the fics that I subscribe to.

The only real reason, I feel, that I continue reading them is because I have to finish reading them (unless they are too far out there, then I stop and wait until the final chapter has been posted, and read that.

also, this movie I'm watching, Intruders (with Clive Owen) is also kind of boring. I might give it another go another time.
simplyn2deep: (Default)
sometimes when I come across a fic by an author I don't recognize, it's summary has me curious (for whatever reason), and it has a lot of kudos and/or views, I look to see who the kudos are from...and if any of the people who have given kudos are from writers I like, I'll read the fic. If not, I'll read the comments (if there are any) and see what other readers had to say...then I'll read the fic.

I've got to get ready for my day. Need to stop by the post office by the courthouse and put something in the morning mail, then work x2, then I have to go to Lane Bryant to pay my bill (and maybe get a cute top or 2)...then I can come home.
simplyn2deep: (Default)
I have a terrible habit of not remembering the fic I read.

Well, that's not entirely true. I do remember a lot of the fic I read either based on the title, summary or within the first few paragraphs.

However, there are some fics I will read the the very end and go to leave a kudo (on AO3), and find out that at some point in the past I had read it and left a kudo.

Maybe I should keep a list of fics that I've read, their summary and when I read them.

This list of 100 books we all ought to have read is by the BBC. You'll find it behind the cut. It was part of a meme a while back. Feel free to post the meme in your own journal if you like.

Bold the ones you’ve read COMPLETELY, italicize the ones you’ve read part of, and no cheating. Watching the movie or the cartoon doesn’t count. Abridged versions don’t count either. BTW, according to the BBC if you’ve read 7 of these, you are above the average.
