of a pretty big kind too! For episode 3.01

So there's this

And I don't know if I'm going to like Doris much, but it's also reminding me about this review posted in the Examiner. Specifically the part this part:

Thrusting her in the middle of the McGarrett/Danno (Scott Caan) partnership shines a light on elements and eccentricities they each have let slide about the other, but because she is a fresh pair of eyes, and a straight-shooter at that, she calls attention to them immediately, forcing them to consider deeper than typical macho dudes might want to.

Doris trying to come off as everyone's mother. I don't know how well that's going to go over.

holy crap! while that's sort funny, I had this odd sense of deja vu and Lori prying into Danny's life as a "profiler".

She's been in hiding for 20 years. Times have changed and Danny isn't her son and she has no right prying into his personal life. Hell she probably doesn't have a right prying into Steve and Mary's lives anymore after what she did to "protect" her family.

Wow. Is it bad that I actually kinda love that I really dislike Doris a LOT there? It's... wow. That after what she did, she would have the balls to be that pushy and jerkface with Danny -- boy, I really like that. Not that I'm liking her, but I find it really good that I'm disliking her so much. Plus, it makes me think of some aspects of Steve's personality; he can be pushy and no respecter of boundaries. (I just don't find him OBNOXIOUS like I'm finding Doris here.)

Plus, if Doris is being this way with Danny because she thinks he and Steve are too close and is "defending" her son -- oh God, I love that. Even if I would hate it for reals, I love it as a character thing here, because it says so much about her. I'm suddenly way more optimistic about Doris than I was before I saw this; at least TPTB aren't making her all Forgiveable and all Perfect / Likeable.

The crappy thing there to me is that Steve apparently didn't hear that conversation between Doris and Danny because he was on the phone. I WISH HE WOULD HAVE HEARD EVERY WORD OF THAT. (Of course he would've interrupted long before the "Danno" from Doris, I think -- I kept wondering why he wasn't, until I found out he was on the phone.)

Man, this is one of my favorite spoilers EVER. Thank you!!!!!

Plus, I loved Danny's response to her, too, I forgot to say that.

I LOVE THIS.

I kind of figured Steve was on the phone because he simply wasn't saying anything when Doris was talking to Danny like that, then I heard his voice talking so I was like, what? then he got mad about Delano and tossed his phone down confirmed that.

Danny's response was good too.

But when Steve gets all pushy and fails to respect boundaries, it's usually because he cares. Doris was just being judgmental.

From: [identity profile] t-verano.livejournal.com
I agree totally! I don't mind pushy Steve (I like pushy Steve, and his pushiness always seems more caring to me, yes) -- but Doris's motives suck, plus like you say below, GLASS HOUSES. I just am really enjoying the fact that TPTB are making her character very visibly less than perfect. I guess because I don't want to like her as a character, and this fits right into that. :-))

From: [identity profile] t-verano.livejournal.com
I meant to say also that I think maybe Doris is jealous of Danny, who's so much closer to Steve than she is and knows him so much better. Not that that's any kind of excuse for her to grill Danny, and be so obnoxious with it.

Please excuse me for babbling -- I just get sort of excited about the whole screwed-up, messy character dynamics possible here. *sheepish grin*

I was definitely getting a 'parent grilling child's prom date' vibe from Doris in that scene.

From: [identity profile] simplyn2deep.livejournal.com
yeah

I took offense to the phrase she used. That's so 1950s or something. There have got to be plenty of women with children who don't want to get re-married.

Oh and I bet she'd like Rachel more for "doing whatever it takes" to protect her child(ren).

Date: 2012-09-21 01:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] t-verano.livejournal.com
Yeah, Doris did a truly outstanding job of being offensive there on all fronts.

(Heh, my brain hurts thinking about her and Rachel.)

I'm guessing by the time the show comes back, Danny and Gabby will have been dating for close to a year. I would be surprised if he proposed to her and talked about moving in together any time soon. I don't think there's anything wrong with moving slow. Better than having a revolving door of women meeting your young impressionable daughter...and that getting back to your wife who threatens to take custody away at the drop of a hat.

From: [identity profile] t-verano.livejournal.com
Yeah, I would think -- especially after his second "attempt" with Rachel -- that Danny would be very, very cautious, and I think that's very wise of him. (Plus, as you say, he sure doesn't need to hand Rachel anything that she could use as Daniel's Not A Good Influence ammunition.)

It's not just that she has no right to go prying into Danny's personal life like that, it's that she has no right to be so judgmental about it. Glass houses and all that.

Is it weird that that's why I'm (so far, from this glimpse, anyway) loving this scene? She's being SUCH a witch. I kinda want her to tick everybody off really badly, so that she doesn't get any kind of free ride to "Oh, Steve's mom, How nice!". Clearly, she's not all that nice, at least not all the time.

*is strangely happy*

I don't want for everyone to greet her with open arms either, but I would've been happier if she'd gotten more of a smackdown for the way she was talking to Danny.

I want there to be more protectiveness of Steve and the core4 when Doris starts in on each and every one of them. I don't think she'd just stop at Danny because he happens to be Steve's partner. What would she have to say about Kono dating the new head of the Yakuza?

Date: 2012-09-21 01:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] the-other-sandy.livejournal.com
I would love to see her put her foot in it and have the Fab Four form a united front against her.

Ohhh, yeah. :-)

Date: 2012-09-21 01:26 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] t-verano.livejournal.com
Yeah, I think Doris will have something to say about/to just about everybody who's important in Steve's life, and I also hope that ends up with the team being protective of each other as far as she's concerned.

I really hope TPTB intend to go in that direction!

Date: 2012-09-21 01:30 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] simplyn2deep.livejournal.com
I think Danny or Chin would/should be the ones to give her a piece of their minds, but considering what Chin's going through, I don't see that happening.

and I wonder what she has to say her Steve and Cath's relationship...

Date: 2012-09-21 01:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] t-verano.livejournal.com
If it wasn't for what Chin will be going through, yeah, my money would be on him -- he picked Joe up at the airport and you could tell he was ticked off with Joe for all the secrecy. And he worked with Steve's dad; he's bound to have some feelings of his own about what Doris did, along with being protective of his friends and family.

I can see Danny or Kono talking straight to Doris, too -- I just hope it happens from ONE of them, anyway! :-)

My brain overloads when you throw Catherine into the mix. I'd somehow forgotten consciously that she's part of this now too (probably because I'm worried about how that's going to work out). Okay, I am officially like, "DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO THINK" about that. :-)))

Date: 2012-09-21 01:53 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] simplyn2deep.livejournal.com
I try not to think about Catherine much. I like her on paper, but then knowing she's going to be around more...and introduced "organically" just has all kinds of alarms going off.

What if it's Doris pushing Steve and Catherine together more that causes the problems between her and Steve...

Date: 2012-09-21 01:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] t-verano.livejournal.com
Oh, me too -- I like Catherine on paper, but I was pretty darn happy to just have her show up occasionally, not be living on the island. And that "organically" is SCARY.

What if it's Doris pushing Steve and Catherine together more that causes the problems between her and Steve...

The possibilities are so intriguing. And how Catherine will react to Doris -- man, I just don't have a clue about the Catherine/Doris/Steve thing. My brain goes explodey now, I think...

Date: 2012-09-21 02:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] simplyn2deep.livejournal.com
It could go the other way. Doris not liking Catherine and that drives them apart.

I'm basing this on the clips we've seen, but Doris comes off 1 of 2 ways for me: no one is good enough for her son, thus how she acts with Danny in the car or she really wants Catherine and Steve together because Catherine can totally hold her own and Steve needs someone like that in his life and blah blah blah.

Date: 2012-09-21 02:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] t-verano.livejournal.com
I kinda don't want her to want Steve and Catherine together, maybe (I haven't really thought this through, just sort of winging it here). I guess because I want her to be sort of messed up after what she did to her children and her husband, how she's been living, the choices she's made -- and I want that to translate into being maybe jealous of Steve's attention, or wanting to try to be a MOM now to the point she's going overboard on trying to control things. If she's together enough to think "Catherine, similar training/professional background as Steve, a strong woman, she would be good for my son" and to think that unselfishly -- that makes her seem less messed up to me, and I'm such an angst junky that I want it all to be messy and screwed up and really not a very good mother-son-and-son's-friends/partners relationship.

And I think my brain really is packing it in now after babbling so much. I have no clue what I just said in the paragraph above this -- I may need to shut up now. :-)))

Date: 2012-09-21 02:40 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] simplyn2deep.livejournal.com
That makes sense. you want her at odds with everyone/everyone to be protective of Steve after what she's done for the last 20 years.

That would make for good drama if it's done correctly.

Date: 2012-09-21 04:49 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] t-verano.livejournal.com
Man, I would LOVE it if they would do that correctly! :SO. MANY. HEARTS.

:-)))

From: [identity profile] t-verano.livejournal.com
Yeah, I would like that too -- I let myself imagine a little future "what goes around comes around" biting her on the ass either in a future scene or (more likely, considering *sigh*) off screen. Probably won't happen on screen, of course. *rolls eyes*

Date: 2012-09-21 12:45 am (UTC)

I was going to say everything that's already been said LOL. Part of me likes her and her attitude, but no, she has no right, no matter what, to be giving Danny advice and calling him "Danno"? Uh-uh, no way, no how!

The other part of me wants her to have it out with Steve (maybe she will) and of course Mary. If I'm going to have a (partial) soap foisted on me by TPTB, I want angst, I want screaming, I'd like to see Mary deck Doris actually.

(Going away now before I totally hijack your post)

CBS/the show needs some good angst like that. I think we have to go through a few episodes before Mary comes back and i hope it's spectacular (and not in a bad way.

From that clip, it does look like Steve dropped the ball in defending his partner. It'll be interesting to see how that whole scene plays out.
