why didn't anyone tell me?

simplyn2deepapparently I suck at research.
this is a comment I got on one of my fics
if you are going to write about Hawaii and use Hawaiian words please do some research. I was jarred out of the story by just by the lack of accuracy regarding the Island and the wrong use of Hawaiian words.
Initially I was just going to ignore it, because no one has ever said that anything was incorrect before, but then I thought maybe I did miss stuff, so I asked the person to let me know what was incorrect so that I could fix it.
eta 1: for those familiar with Hawaii, what is kalabash? I was told that Kalakaua Aunties was supposed to be kalabash aunties? umm what?
eta 2: I learned something new. Kalabash is a term used to describe family that isn't blood family. Kono's Auntie's would be kalabash family to Steve/Danny and baby
