So we all know there was that one time where Grace called Steve "Uncle Steve" in episode 1x23 when he went to pick her up from school while Danny was in the hospital...

I'm wondering if it was out of respect (like how Kono referred to the old lady as "Auntie" in episode 1x12 when she was waiting for Steve to come back from stealing borrowing the money from the HPD asset forfeiture locker and how Chin introduced himself to Grace as "Uncle Chin" in episode 1x03 at the football game)

or

If Steve and Danny are that close that Grace would consider him like an uncle.

and also, if there's been any times where Grace has called Chin "Uncle Chin".

These are things I wish they'd put in the show.

I think it's a teaching kids respect thing. I was taught to never be that familiar with adults that I used their first name.

All adults were Mr and Mrs or their rank, but I was brought up to call any adult that was a close family friend Aunt or Uncle that has carried through to adulthood my good friends, even close friends of my siblings who have kids, all their kids call me auntie suzy, except for one neice she doesn't understand the whole auntie/uncle concept, but that's because her parents didn't want to be called mum and dad. She was taught to call them Mick and Kelli, so I'm Miss Suzy to her.

In Hawaii Auntie and Uncle is a respect thing, younger people I am familiar with but don't really 'know' me call me Auntie while I'm there. So while I don't think I've ever heard it in Canon it seems to be a reasonable expectation that Grace would call the other two members Auntie Kono and Uncle Chin.

Does that help?

I get the respect thing and figured that since Kono didn't introduce herself to Grace as "Auntie Kono" that title was sort of reserved for people over a certain age.

Kids are taught from when they're little adults that aren't family are Aunty/Uncle. It is a respect thing.

Also when I've taken some bus tours there the bus drivers have called the passengers aunty/uncle as the need arises, so it's not just an age thing. It really is more a respect thing than anything else I think.

I had one; his name was "Uncle Jack" and he was a cop in Brooklyn and my Dad's best friend. I am also honorary "Aunt Karen" to 2 different friend's sons. IMO given S & D's relationship as partners, and the loyalty and friendship they ALL have as ohana, Steve and Chin would be Dutch uncles and Kono an honorary Aunt.
