I've been saving towards going to Hawaii for my 35th birthday since my 30th last year and so far what I have saved is laughable.

$50/month for the last 12 months has gotten me $600. I will continue to put away $50/month until I don't have a job at the end of the year, but that will still only get me $750. Even if I let it collect interest, that's not going to get me much of anything and eventually I'm going to have to break into that because I do still have bills to pay.

*sighs*

Anyway, I figure...a week in Hawaii, maybe a bit of Island hopping...that's going to be pretty expensive. By my estimation, I'll need to have saved $220/month for the next 46 months...or I could do a cruise and it would be half the cost.

The point is...saving for this is going to be nearly impossible and that really sucks.

Where's a sugar daddy when I need one?!

and...

18 hours and 31 minutes until my birthday.

yay!

Yeah, I hear you.

I have zero savings. I am kind of contemplating bank robbery for travel funds.

We had a board meeting today (if which I am on) and they voted to give paid employees (me, the musician and retiring pastor) 3 months severance pay.

Great. That's like $1200 for me. Only not really because that will be for bills and not for fun, so savings is still going to have to be broken into at some point.

I really counting on that unemployment check to help with bills, even if I'd only be getting it for 6-12 months.

Keep trying! You never know what's going to happen in four years!

[livejournal.com profile] kaige68 and I made a 5 year plan to meet in Hawaii when we first became online friends... that was 2005, so 2010 came and went and nothing happened. But in 2011, we made another five year plan and we're going to meet up in 2016 there instead (along with some other friends). It's HARD, believe me - I'm only saving $25 a month AND my husband is coming too, but every time I get any extra money for any reason (even if it's just winning $25 on Lotto or something) I put it into the fund, plus you just can't even know if something major life-changing will happen that will allow extra money to be put in the fund!

I would just say: BELIEVE IT, and keep saving. Even if it doesn't happen for your 35th, maybe it will happen a little later, but if you really want it, you'll get there eventually! GOOD LUCK! *hugs*

My thing is, I can't rationalize continuing to save for a trip that may or may not happen in 4 years when I currently have bills and any money I have/get should be going towards that so my credit doesn't get screwed up.

I get that and totally think it makes sense. Maybe you could just lower your saving amount per month, or temporarily suspend it until you get more work. And maybe, realistically, making the four year plan into a slightly longer one (5 or 6 years or something) makes sense right now until you can get another job. You can always bring it forward again if things change, after all. I know it could be hard, but if at all possible, try not to touch the savings you already have set aside, but don't beat yourself up if you have to - there will always be another year. Good luck!
