His World
Danny Williams was about to cash in the mother of all favors.
Back in New Jersey he worked this high profile case and the victims were so grateful that they told Danny, on the down low, that if there was anything he needed, all he had to do was ask.
After his afternoon with Grace, he dropped her off back at her mother’s, went back to his current apartment and pulled out his little black book. He turned to the last page to confirm the number he memorized all those years ago was correct, and put the book away.
Steadying his nerves, Danny picked up his phone and dialed the 16 digit number. The phone rang a couple of times before it was answered. “Campbell residence,” the voice on the other end said.
“Martha Campbell, please,” Danny said. “Tell her that her American grandson-in-law is calling.” Danny waited while the person he wanted to speak to came to the phone.
“My Daniel, it’s been quite a while. Is everything okay?” The woman asked.
“Everything…everything isn’t okay,” Danny said. “Martha, I know you don’t like getting in the middle of your children or grandchildren’s problems, but this is really important.”
“How many times have do I have to remind you, it’s Nana,” the woman admonished with a soft laugh. “Does this have to do with my granddaughter?”
Danny allowed a ghost of a smile to cross his lips. “Yes, Nana, this has to do with Rachel and Grace.”
There was a sigh and Danny could hear a shuffling of papers. “Tell me what my granddaughter has done now.”
Danny told his former Grandmother-in-law of the current hassles with Rachel. He told her about the new family he has in Hawaii and how Rachel continued to limit his time with Grace, how Rachel doesn’t approve of his current relationship, despite having planned her cousin, Rodney’s civil ceremony.
“Oh, Daniel,” was all that Martha said after Danny finished. “It seems I haven’t been getting the complete story from Rachel. I will remedy that immediately.”
“Thank you, Nana. So much,” Danny said. “Rachel is probably going to hate me even more for involving you, but I’ve made a life here and I hate that I’m in the position of having to choose again.”
“Don’t you worry about that,” Martha said. “I’ll speak with Rachel soon, and I expect a visit from you soon; you, Gracie and that new man in your life.”
Danny smiled and nodded his head some, as if the woman could see him. “I’d like for you to meet him. I’ll see what I can do. Thank you again Nana.”
“You’re quite welcome, Daniel. I’ll speak with you soon.”
The call ended and Danny leaned back against his couch, content to let his current custody matter sit on the back burner while he contemplated the call he’d received from Steve a few hours earlier.
