I'm already planning the fix it fic, but will wait to see if I really need to type it up. I'm trying really hard to give the show the benefit of the doubt about this

Mary adopts baby. Steve lectures but is supportive. Mary goes away with baby, comes back with it for her brother's wedding to Catherine at the end of this season, then isn't seen again until she's murdered in S5 case. Steve solves his sister's murder (maybe it ties in with the family troubles and the core mysteries) and he and Catherine adopt his niece.

Sound about right? Not in favor of it, but feels like the possible plan to me....
