In about 12 days it will be the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s I Have a Dream speech given from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. in front of nearly 300,000 people. The speech was also broadcast to a large radio and television audience so hundreds of thousands of more people heard and watched if they couldn't or didn't want to be there.

It's been 45 years since King was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.

He was only 39 years old. If he was still alive, he'd be 84 years old.

I wonder what he would think of our Nation today...of the world today...of the wars going on in Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan...just the whole conflict going on in the Middle East.

some pictures to come later

The fact that his life, his 'speeches' and his character still speak volumes today shows the power the man had. I think if he were still alive he'd be a powerful player amongst the world leaders in still bringing attention to in-equalities that exist.

I don't think there has been a person as awe inspiring and motivating as there was in MLK (for me personally) - we need people who speak with passion about bringing end to conflicts, who speak of the in-equalities towards members of our society. Decades ago, people fought for rights to vote, to marry a person of a different colour. Today, people fight for the right to marry to person they love who happens to be the same gender as them. The world has grown up but unfortunately some ignorance's haven't changed - doesn't mean they can't, just means it takes time.

I think, as a teacher, he'd continue to teach us that only through educating ourselves, channeling love instead of hate, making people see other peoples as just that, another human being, despite our differences in religion, gender, skin colour that the world will and can change.

I think if he had lived the state of race in the US would not be what it is today. And I think he would be appalled at what is happening in the world. BTW, have you ever seen Eyes On The Prize?
