I want to do something for an LJ friend, but I don't know them all that well.

I've been reading their journal entries and they're having some hard times right now and I want to provide a bit of brightness for them, but I honestly don't know how to go about doing that.

I don't think it's my place, so to speak, to go through their friends list asking others how close they are with this person or getting personal information from them about this person.

So I'll sit here and continue to think of something else I can do that can add some brightness to this person's life.

In other news...we got mail yesterday! Monday was the letter from the USPS saying our temporary change of address had been processed and Tuesday there was like 20 pieces of mail for me and my parents...plus 2 boxes that were shipped directly from my parents while they were still in FL to me at my sister's place. My dad said to expect another box today, so I've got to get to my sister's place before 6 pm so I don't miss FedEx.

You could do something neutral so to speak, like take a look at the profile and see what fandoms they like or if you know what fandoms they enjoy and make them a little gift post based on that to cheer them up. A graphic, icons, a fic, something based on their enjoyments.

Or you could send them a private message - sometimes just reaching out and saying to a person you're thinking of them as they go through a difficult time is an encouragement to the person even if you don't know them that well.

Or you could contact their other friends with the aim of all posting on the same agreed date something nice about that person - a few lines, a poem, something about their favourite fandom or whatever, just to show you all are thinking about them. That way you don't feel you're invading their space or privacy, because you're just organising a mass 'we're all thinking about you' moment for the person.

just thought I'd throw in a few ideas, hope you think of something x

Thanks for those ideas. I like that last suggestion.

I agree with the above comment, especially that last suggestion. Then you could always send her a little postcard or some small gift to let her know you're thinking of her on your own, without getting other people involved.
