A rocky return for Mrs. McGarrett (mild spoiler)
August 7th, 2012 byTerry
As many of us suspected, Steve McGarrett is going to be hesitant to take everything his returning mother says, at face value. But it appears there may be even more obstacles for Doris McGarrett (Christine Lahti) to overcome when she surfaces in Season 3 of Hawaii Five-0.

Got any more details about McGarrett’s mom on Hawaii Five-0? — Janine
ADAM: As you may have guessed, Steve is going to be mighty skeptical about his mother’s motives, given that he’s lived years believing she was dead. Unfortunately for Mama McGarrett, she’s going to have to win over Steve’s entire team if she wants to repair the relationship. “Catherine and Danny and the team — they’re going to be wary of her,” executive producer Peter Lenkov tells us. “You want to believe that her intentions are good, but at the end of the day, there’s going to be a lot of gray and a lot of questions about what she is up to. This team is very open with each other, and she keeps a lot of secrets.”

my thoughts
we must not being watching the same show because my first thought when I read the last line was what? It's been a while since the team was "open" with each other...or there wouldn't have been the week where Steve was missing in places unknown...or they wouldn't have had to wait for Jenna to call and say she messed up, thus needed the team to swoop in and rescue Steve from Wo-Fat! and let not forget what went on with Kono at the hands of Fryer!
So have I need watching a different show and missed the team being open with each other?

Date: 2012-08-08 12:05 pm (UTC)Second -- I missed some of the beginning of last season, including the Kono undercover story, but I sort of have a different take on the team, that there's a lot of behind-the-scenes communication we don't get to see because the episodes are more focused on the crime of the week, not on filling in the gaps with the team catching each other up on stuff that's going on.
I get what you mean about Kono and Fryer, but if she was undercover and really playing it tight, she wouldn't have told the others anything. I do think that at that early part of the season, they weren't all working together as a team as much, though, no; that it was after Kono's undercover op was over that they began to pull back together again.
I'm not sure how Jenna fits into them being open or not open with each other? Steve was up front with Danny and everybody about where he was going and why; Jenna totally *wasn't* upfront, but she was deliberately betraying Steve in hopes that she could get her fiance back.
Steve going off alone after his "Dear Danno" note -- yeah, I can sort of see what you mean, except that Steve wasn't hiding why he was going and Danny and Chin (the scene at Steve's house where Danny is going through Steve's dad's clues and finds the map, for example) knew what he was trying to do. They may not have agreed with it, and not agreed with Steve staying out of contact while he was gone, but Steve at least told them why he left. (And Steve being Steve, dealing with classified stuff, with a military mindset and a go-it-alone one, as well as a strong need to protect his friends from the dangerous parts of his past -- I tend to see Danny and Chin and Kono understanding why Steve did what he did, even if they'd rather he never do it again.
We just never get to see the behind-the-scenes conversations that handle all this. I think there was a scene in the season finale, where Danny and Steve were in the Camaro and they have a discussion where one of them says something like "friends don't keep problems from each other"? And I'm pretty sure that Danny says something that makes it clear that he and Steve have already had a discussion about Steve keeping his problems to himself, as in the "Dear Danno" letter/Shelburne problem, and that in that previous discussion Danny worked hard on getting through to Steve that Steve is not alone with his problems. The discussion would've had to take place "off-screen" between the previous episode and the season finale, and so that car scene really locked in for me that there's a lot of interaction going on that we never see...
Okay, sorry to be so long-winded! I LOVE this spoiler, thanks!

Date: 2012-08-08 03:32 pm (UTC)And my god, I'm thrilled that the team isn't going to welcome Doris with open arms! And that Steve is suspicious. I'm so excited that she's going to have earn some of that forgiveness she seeks, because whatever her reasons for protecting her family results in years of emotional trauma. I love this spoiler. It makes me very happy!
Thanks for sharing it.
