Today I got 3 things in the mail that made me feel special!

1. a congratulations card from [livejournal.com profile] dontelltheelf on getting my driver's license. I totally wasn't expecting that!

2. my actual driver's license! I wasn't expecting it so soon. I took and passed the test last Wednesday and when the lady gave me the temporary license print out, it said that it expires July 14, 2012 and that I should have my real one before then. Well, yep, I got it. and the picture isn't as bad as I thought. (now to get a car!)

3. JURY DUTY SUMMONS! everyone thinks I'm crazy for wanting to have jury duty, but it's something I want to experience - getting on a case and seeing it through to the end. The closest I got to actually being on a case was October 2006, but then was excused because it was mid-terms week and I couldn't reschedule the tests. I'm on call the week of June 4th at the Downtown LA courthouse on temple Street eta oh crap! I just realized something! the June Primary is June 5th! that's during my on call time with Jury duty, so I'm going to have to change the date in case I actually have to go in on June 5th. UGH! My dad said to call and explain to them my situation and if I can postpone it until June 11th..or I can pick a date in September, October or November and hope I don't have a job that will make it impossible for me to do it. I'll have to call Jury Services tomorrow afternoon.

Isn't it nice having your driver's license in your hands?!

Yes, I think you're crazy about jury duty but you have a reason for wanting to seerve on a jury. When we're summons here we only have to report for 1 day and of course it would be longer if chosen for a trial. The last time I was called for jury duty I received an email the day before saying I didn't have to report the next day. Made me happy :-)

here, you're on call where you have to call between 5 pm and midnight to see if you have to actually go in the next day. you do that for 5 days or until you're told to go in. If you're not told to go in, you're done for the year. If you're called to go in, you're either called on a case or done with your duty for the year. That's not bad at all.

my boss tho, OMG she complains about it. She's 56 or 57 and has only had to go in half a dozen times, and I don't think she's ever been on a case, but she complains about the 1 day of having to go about 11.5 miles to the courthouse. for me, it's 14 miles and I'd probably be on the bus and train and have to leave at 6 or 7 am to get there on time.

I find it interesting how from State to State jury duty differs.

There was a time when we could pick the courthouse that we wanted to go to now you have to go to the one that is assigned to you. I've been called only two times, the last one I didn't have to report and the time before I had to report and stayed until about noon when we were all released.

You can have it transferred to a different courthouse, but you have to have a good reason. my dad said I should see about getting it transferred. and what would I say "I volunteer at this one courthouse and I'd like to do my service there because it's closer" to me, that's not a good reason.

There are only a few reasons that you can transfer here and that's not one of them even though it sounds like a good one to me.

I'd rather be someplace where people don't know my face lol, then again, I haven't been in the jury services room at the courthouse I volunteer at, so they wouldn't know me.

A license is a big deal (says the person who doesn't have one) so I thought I had to help mark your awesome achievement!

I wonder if they'll actually consider your volunteering at the polling place as your "civic duty" for the year, and therefore not have you actually serve?

my dad says there's actually no court on election day but I'd rather be safe than sorry. plus, I'll also work the election again in November so I can't have it postponed until then either.

Oh definitely. I don't know if you can tell them exactly when you want to have your jury duty rescheduled. When I requested a transfer to Torrance, so my lazy butt wouldn't have to go to Long Beach, they just gave me a new date 2 months afterwards.

I'm okay with later in June, July and August. September I'm still planning on going to Hawaii (if not for a week, then for my birthday weekend), so later in the month is okay. I also plan on having a full time job, so I'd rather get it over and done with now
