since the show (do I really need to specify which one? LOL) start and Mary Ann McGarrett was introduced, I've wanted to do a fic that focused on her. Oh if I had the talent and there were enough clips on the show of her, I'd do a video.

Then I heard Lindsay Lohan's Confessions Of A Broken Heart (it's secretly one of my favorite songs) and it just sounds like Mary crying out for attention of her father...and maybe even Steve.

I wait for the postman to bring me a letter
And I wait for the good Lord to make me feel better
And I carry the weight of the world on my shoulders
Family in crisis that only grows older

I'm sure when she was sent to the mainland, she was hoping that either her father would change his mind and send for them to come back, or at the very least, have some sort of communication with her.

Why'd you have to go
Why'd you have to go
Why'd you have to go

Maybe she's thinking that if her mother was killed in the car accident, she wouldn't have been sent away. Yes, this is a daughter crying out to her father, but this all started, really, when Doris McGarrett was killed (first we were told by a drunk driver, but later found out it was because of John's investigation).

Daughter to father, daughter to father
I am broken but I am hoping
Daughter to father, daughter to father
I am crying, a part of me is dying and
These are, these are
The confessions of a broken heart

I think I remember Steve mentioning that Mary acted out a lot once their mother was done and was her way of getting attention, but I don't think it managed to turn her father's head to really pay attention to her

And I wear all your old clothes, the old polo sweater
I dream of another you, one who would never
Never leave me alone to pick up the pieces
Daddy to hold me, that's what I needed

So why'd you have to go
Why'd you have to go
Why'd you have to go

This part is when I think she comes back to Hawaii and she's in the house she grew up in and finds one of her father's old pieces of clothing and she wears it while she's going through the Champ box (not when we saw on the show)...and she's wondering why he had to go - why he threw himself into whatever he was investigating...and if that was what got him killed.

Daughter to father, daughter to father
I don't know you, but I still want to
Daughter to father, daughter to father
Tell me the truth, did you ever love me
Cause these are, these are
The confessions of a broken heart
Of a broken heart

I love you, I love you
I love you, I...
I love you!

Deep down, I believe she loved her father, like Steve did, but without their mother around, they no longer had someone to tell them they were loved and that maybe prevented them from being able to accept love as well.

Daughter to father, daughter to father
I don't know you but I still want to
Daughter to father, daughter to father
Tell me the truth, did you ever love me?
Did you ever love me?
These are...
The confessions of a broken heart

Ohhhh... yeah

And I wait for the postman to bring me a letter

And then the final time she was sent away. This time by her brother because it wasn't safe. She was being sent away by yet another male figure in her life and she's maybe wondering if it's really her.

I don't know about all that. just my thoughts. Maybe a little of how I would have felt if I were Mary.

It's funny you post this now. [livejournal.com profile] huntress69 and myself were discussing Mary McGarrett the other day. We kind of came up with a bit of backstory/headcanon for her:

when they were young Mary and Steve were practically inseparable. Where you found one, the other was always within 'spitting distance'. He had her back when bullies would pick on her. But when Steve went to high school that changed. He got into football and just didn't have time for her.

When they were separated to go to the mainland (which in my mind Mary fought with all she had, she wanted them to be placed together) the relatives that took Mary in were emotionally abusive (possibly physically too). She wrote to Steve all the time, but he was so busy being pissed at Jack that he never responded. She also tried to run away, wanting to be with Steve and get away from the abusive relatives. At this point she was drinking and (at the very least) smoking pot. She got a boyfriend who got her into harder drugs, and attempted to prostitute her to his friends.

Steve, of course never knew this was going on because when he finally got over his anger and got in touch with the people Mary was staying with they lied and told him she was doing well, and happy, and blah blah blah. Really they hadn't seen her in months by this time, had no clue where she was staying/who with/what she'd gotten herself into.

When news of Jack's death reached her she was, at first, too coked up to care, then she felt like 'he didn't give a rats ass about me and what I've been through, why should I care about this'. It hits her shortly after that and she's just starting to clean up when she comes to Hawaii. Hence the smoke detector in the plane's bathroom, and why she looks like hell.

That could be so. and goes a long with some of what we learned about her in the episodes she's been on (unless I'm yet again mixing canon and fanon - wouldn't be the first time)
