I wouldn't be surprised to find out at a future date that CBS was insistent on this to prove Steve as a "hard-core" heterosexual and to shift away from the bromance.

Yeah, they tried that on The Unit with Redcap and that turned out OH SO WELL. Which is why I totally think of Lori as Redcap. Ha.
