never thought I'd do this

working on my fic for [livejournal.com profile] h50_exchange and I'm doing something I always hate in H50 fic - having Steve speak Pidgin. I don't recall him ever doing so on the show...there was that one time when he spoke to the surfer in episode 1.05 and told him "Danno don't surf" but that's hardly pidgin...in my fic Steve's done it several times in a conversation.

I might take it out. It doesn't feel like it's Steve.

n e ways. leaving the office since I have 90% of my work done. tomorrow should be a breeze *crosses fingers*

actually he spoke "bird" to Kammekona in the Pilot when he wanted info with Danny that time....

He also spoke Pidgin in the pilot with Kamekona. I think it'd depend on the context. If someone spoke Pidgin to him, he'd respond in kind. In the pilot, I think he was using it to show Kamekona that he wasn't just some tourist, he was from Hawaii too, so Kamekona would be more likely to trust him.

I think what tripped me up is that I forgot Steve is actually talking with a professional type person. However, this person did use Pidgin first, so I guess it was "natural" for Steve to use it as well.

I think it depends on the context of the situation. Steve always strikes me as a get the job done kinda guy, (most men I've known who were in the military and actual combat do) so if he were speaking in a time/place/situation where Pidgin gets the job done better than standard English, he would. But if it's striking you as "off", then you may be on to something. You can always try a rewrite, taking out one or two references till it feels more natural.
