Washington University was the first school my friend recommended to me not realizing that I wanted to (at the time) stay in California. But the more I talked to her, the more she got me to realize that remaining in state could limit my possibilities. It doesn't hurt to apply to out-of-state schools...then come back to California when I finish or I could decide to remain in whatever state I happen to be in.
It's also like a 9-hour drive to where my mom is in Detroit. So that's a big plus.
