Kids are taught from when they're little adults that aren't family are Aunty/Uncle. It is a respect thing.

Also when I've taken some bus tours there the bus drivers have called the passengers aunty/uncle as the need arises, so it's not just an age thing. It really is more a respect thing than anything else I think.
